MC0307 Modbus to PA Built-in Module

MC0307 Working Modes

The MC0307 can operate in two modes:

  • Configuration Mode
  • Normal Working Mode

The operating mode is selected through the eighth position M of the DIP switch:

ON = Configuration Mode

OFF = Normal Working Mode

Configuration Mode

In Configuration Mode, the MC0307 operates as a Modbus slave station and the Modbus general configuration tool operates as the Modbus master station.

The configuration tool can configure basic device information such as manufacturer ID, device ID and device address source. It can also configure the 16 cyclic parameters and 42 acyclic parameters, including the Modbus function code and register address used to read or write parameters.

After configuration, the configuration information is downloaded to the MC0307 for storage.

Normal Working Mode

In Normal Working Mode, the MC0307 operates as the Modbus master station and the user’s equipment operates as the Modbus slave station.

The MC0307 sends Modbus commands according to the configured working mechanism. Data collected from the Modbus device is mapped to the transformation block parameters by reading and writing Modbus registers.

The transformation block then provides data to the PROFIBUS system through the AI, AO, DI and DO function blocks.

Working Process

The normal working mechanism consists of three stages:

Initialization Stage

The initialization stage is used to test whether Modbus communication is normal.

A Modbus command is selected according to the actual configuration. If a correct response is obtained, the module proceeds to the next stage.

The command selection priority is:

  1. Read serial port address
  2. Read analog input
  3. Read discrete input

At least one of the analog input quantity and discrete input quantity must be non-zero.

Acyclic Stage

The acyclic stage mainly reads the configured data once.

The reading order is:

Analog Input → Discrete Input → Floating Point Data → USIGN32 Data → USIGN16 Data → USIGN8 Data → Octet String Data

When all data has been read correctly, the module enters the cyclic stage. Otherwise, the acyclic stage is executed again until the data has been read successfully.

Cyclic Stage

The cyclic stage performs cyclic reading of cyclic input and output parameters and writing of non-cyclic parameters.

The module sends commands for:

  • Reading analog inputs
  • Writing analog outputs
  • Reading discrete inputs
  • Writing discrete outputs

When an acyclic parameter changes, the corresponding write command is sent.

PA Network Topology

The MC0307 supports PROFIBUS PA network connections.

The manual describes multiple PA network topology methods and specifies that terminal matching resistors should be connected at both ends of the bus to ensure signal quality.

The maximum bus length specified in the manual is 1900 m, and a repeater can extend the length to 10 km.

Modbus Communication Configuration

The Modbus communication parameters are the basic configuration parameters between the MC0307 and the user’s Modbus device.

The module supports configuration of:

  • Baud rate
  • Data bits

GSD File Configuration

The Modbus general configuration tool can configure basic information in the GSD file and generate a user-specific device GSD file.

The manual states that the GSD file describes PROFIBUS device features, including supported baud rate, information length, input/output data quantity, diagnostic information and optional module types.

After configuration, the MC0307 can generate a manufacturer GSD file. The manual also describes the use of a profile GSD file and the configuration of the function blocks contained in the manufacturer’s GSD file.

User Product GSD and ID Number

The MC0307 is sold as an OEM module. The user’s PROFIBUS devices have their own intellectual property rights and brand.

According to the manual, a user product should not use the module’s ID number and GSD file name. The user can replace the company name, product model and series number in the GSD file with the information of the user’s own product and form a GSD file for that product.

The ID number configured in the module must match the ID number in the GSD file for the connection.

EDD File

The manual states that PROFIBUS PA uses EDD files and device DTM as device description files.

The MC0307 provides an EDD file template that users can modify according to their own requirements. The manual also notes that changes to the number of parameters may affect EDD parameter reading and that the parameters in the EDD file need to match the configured parameters.

For EDD documentation or device DTM requirements, users can contact Microcyber.

Slave Address Configuration

After module configuration, the MC0307 can be switched back to normal working mode and embedded into the user’s product to form a PROFIBUS PA slave device.

The module supports software-based address configuration through:

  • Bus address setting
  • Serial port address setting

When serial port address setting is disabled, the slave station address can be set through a bus command.

When serial port address setting is enabled, the slave station address is obtained from the Modbus register specified by the bus address register parameter.

Product Development Process

The manual describes the first stage of product development as hardware design.

According to the module dimensions and interface pin definitions, the hardware schematic and PCB of the original user product are redesigned. For M-series compatibility, the interface pin definitions of the M-series modules should be considered during hardware design.
