WirelessHART Network Management

G1100 is designed to establish, manage and maintain a WirelessHART network. Its web interface provides access to network information and configuration settings, allowing users to monitor connected devices and inspect wireless communication status.

The network overview displays the number of online and offline nodes, network reliability, network stability and network latency.

Additional node information includes device tags, node status, join time, neighboring devices, signal information and communication path quality. The gateway also records failed network joins and gateway configuration events.

These functions help engineers examine network status and identify communication conditions that may require further investigation.

WirelessHART Network Capacity and Update Intervals

According to the G1100 user manual, the gateway supports the following network specifications:

Parameter Specification
Wireless protocol WirelessHART, IEC 62591
Wireless frequency range 2.4–2.5 GHz
Wireless technology DSSS
Maximum network size 250 wireless devices
Configurable device update intervals 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 seconds; 1–60 minutes
Network delay, 50 devices Less than 5 seconds
Network delay, 100 devices Less than 10 seconds
Specified network data reliability Greater than 99%

Network delay and data reliability are specified in the manual for the stated network conditions. Actual network performance depends on the operating environment and network configuration.

WirelessHART Data Monitoring and Diagnostics

G1100 provides web-based access to measurement information and device status.

The measurement interface can display:

  • Primary Variable (PV)
  • Secondary Variable (SV)
  • Tertiary Variable (TV)
  • Quaternary Variable (QV)
  • Dynamic-variable health status
  • Wireless communication state
  • HART device status
  • Loop current, where available
  • Last update time

The gateway also provides node details, Burst information, network statistics and Modbus statistics. Engineers can inspect recorded configuration events and information about failed attempts to join the wireless network.

These monitoring functions allow users to view field-device data and network information from the gateway interface.

Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP Integration

G1100 supports Modbus RTU through its RS-485 interface and Modbus TCP through Ethernet.

The gateway functions as a Modbus device that can be polled by a Modbus master or client. Users can configure a register map to make selected WirelessHART field-device data available as Modbus registers.

Supported data types include 32-bit floating-point values, integer values and Boolean values. Available mapped information includes process variables, device variables, variable health indications, wireless communication status and HART device status.

The register map can be configured through the web interface. The gateway also supports importing and exporting mapping files in CSV format.

Modbus Communication Interfaces

Parameter Specification
Serial interface RS-485
Serial protocol Modbus RTU
Supported baud rates 1,200–115,200 bit/s, at specified selectable rates
Ethernet interface 10/100BASE-TX
Ethernet protocol Modbus TCP
Default Modbus TCP port 502
Data types 32-bit floating-point, integer and Boolean
Register mapping User-configurable

The RS-485 connection distance is specified as up to 1,200 m with shielded twisted-pair cable. The Ethernet cable distance is specified as up to 100 m using shielded Category 5e cable.

OPC DA v2 Integration

G1100 supports OPC communication through an OPC server that implements OPC DA v2.

Users can configure OPC mapping to select the WirelessHART field-device data points that OPC clients can read. The mapping can be configured through the gateway web interface, with CSV import and export also supported.

This allows selected wireless measurement and device information to be accessed by industrial control systems with an OPC interface.

HART-IP Communication

G1100 supports HART-IP over Ethernet and provides access to field-device measurement and diagnostic information.

HART-IP communication is available in both TCP and UDP modes.

Parameter Specification
Protocol HART-IP
Transport modes TCP and UDP
TCP port 8882
UDP port 8885

The gateway manual also documents support for HART Server software.

Private Protocol for Data Upload and Downstream Communication

In addition to standard industrial protocols, G1100 provides two private TCP/IP communication protocols.

Active upload protocol

The gateway can send field-device Burst information to a client application using its active upload protocol. The documented TCP port is 8880.

Downstream communication protocol

A client can send read and write commands to a wireless field device through the gateway’s downstream communication protocol. The documented TCP port is 8881.

These interfaces provide additional communication options for applications that use the gateway’s documented private protocol formats.

Wireless Network Security

G1100 provides security functions for WirelessHART and Ethernet communication.

According to the product manual:

  • WirelessHART communication uses AES-128 encryption, including a session key.
  • Ethernet communication supports SSL/TCP/IP.
  • The gateway allows configuration of the wireless network name, Network ID and Join Key.

The Join Key is a hexadecimal security key used when a wireless device joins the network. The gateway and the device must use matching Join Keys.

Correct network configuration is required for devices to join and communicate with the WirelessHART network.

Web-Based Configuration

G1100 provides a web interface for configuring and monitoring gateway operation.

The interface includes functions for:

  • Wireless network settings
  • Node configuration
  • Security settings
  • Ethernet configuration
  • Protocol configuration
  • Modbus register mapping
  • Time settings
  • OPC mapping
  • Firmware upgrade
  • System backup and restore

The interface also provides network and Modbus statistics, node information, measurement information, Burst configuration and event records.
